Valuable Skills Obtained in College and a New Beginning
Register for fall semester, train my ass off for (wrestling) hell-week, get use to my fall schedule, go to wrestling practice, attend class, compete in wrestling tournaments, end of fall semester-start of spring semester, wrestling practice, class, end of wrestling season, class, class, class, graduation! Ka-boom! It’s all over! Thats basically my college senior year (August-May) in a nut shell and just like that its all over. I feel like a gigantic explosion went off and now I’m waiting for the dust to settle (and I’ll tell you the dust it still trying to settle).
I had such a demanding and routine schedule that I still feel the need to login my university’s website and check if my professors posted new assignments. After checking for the final time today it hit me – I’m done, no more school.
Create Your Own Schedule
Done with school, no more demanding and routine schedules right? Wrong! Its only the beginning – now I get to create my own schedule around things I want to do, but I still expect my schedule to be demanding and maybe routine at times. Flexibility and being able to control your time is the goal when creating your own schedule – plan on staying productive and molding a schedule that brings out your best work.
Give Yourself Assignments
The beauty of school is that other people give you assignments and your job is to get the assignments done. There is no room for creativity and no room negotiation – just get it done. Not so beautiful, well now with your own ventures or projects you do have room for creativity and adjustments, no more strict guidelines. The most effective way I give myself assignments is by sitting down the night before I go bed and write down the top three tasks I need to get done. The next morning I wake up knowing what needs to be executed before I do anything else…everything else I do for that day is bonus.
Give Yourself Deadlines
One thing I will never forget about college is the strict deadlines and due dates. I never turned in anything late — I always found a way to get things done. Even if I had a huge paper due within the next 24hours I always managed to get it done with a passing grade (some all-nighters were required). The consequences of not getting the assignment done scared the s#!t out of me. Valuable lesson – always set deadlines and have a consequence if the deadline is not met. Sean Ogle over at Location 180 wrote a great post on this concept titled Consequences are Everything.
Now that I graduated I’m going to use these simply skills I’ve obtained and apply them to my work and lifestyle. Time to start the next chapter of my life — life after college, creating passive income streams, and designing the life I desire.

Hello and welcome, I'm Tony Ruiz. My work revolves around learning and applying efficient processes, human psychology, Internet marketing, and user experience to web-based projects. You can learn more about me
Yes more and more I see the importance of setting schedules and deadlines. I’m not the most structured person – I’m good once I get into a zone i can stay focused for a long time but sometimes I just waste time getting into that zone.
One thing I have been using well is the “if I only had 2hours to work today what is the most important thing I would do” then get that task done each day as a starting point. I find that helps
Right on Vinay, once I started setting deadlines for myself I noticed my productivity rate skyrocketed. Even if its weekly deadlines you’re forced to meet them.
Hey Tony,
These are excellent lessons that you learned, that you can now apply into your new begining! Excellent story man.
Thank you Baker! I hope you found some value from the lessons I learned too!
This was good to read. Now that you don’t have school pushing you towards a schedule, you know that you have to push yourself. I think that’s great knowledge to take from college. Good luck.
