Automation, Mobility, and More!

I’m humbled to be the first audio podcast interviewee on Chris Ducker’s Virtual Business Lifestyle. I had the privilege to interview Chris here on my blog and it was great to return the favor as he interviewed me for his blog. If you haven’t checked it out yet make sure to do so.
As college graduation is quickly approaching I wanted to share the expectations I have for myself and why you should consider implementing these concepts as well.
Ambitious People
Do you often think about the people you surround yourself with? The people you associate with often rub off on you. Think about if the people you’re hanging out with are either holding you back or encouraging you to grow. Make sure you’re spending most your time with eagles instead of pigeons. Grow your network around ambitious people by reaching out to them at networking events, mixers, and my favorite thing to do is to invite them on VentureMixx for an interview.
Passive Income
Creating multiple streams of income for yourself should be a definite goal. You can’t go wrong with setting yourself up with different income streams. Especially now that the internet is in play, there are tons of virtual real estate up for grabs, e-commerce, web app development, affiliate marketing, digital product creation, etc. The sky’s the limit, think about how you can setup tunnels of cash flow for yourself.
Mobility
We now have the option to set ourselves up to work at remote locations, even if you have to deal with a temporary 9-5 (of course you may need to make some sort of arrangements but its possible). I find myself doing my best work when I’m at a quite place with zero distractions. The idea of being able to shut your laptop close and work at any location you desire is now possible. Why not take advantage of it? Especially if it increases productivity. Its great to have a home base but your home base shouldn’t be the only place you can do work.
Automation
I’ve been testing out various ways I can setup task automation. Some tasks simply take way too long to complete and they really don’t have to be that way. You should always have the mentality of how you can be more effective with your time by setting up automation where simple tasks can’t consume most of your time. If you have the option to automate time consuming routines, why not? Test out what works for you and think about what options you have (you’ll be surprised).
Systems
“In short, people should not be doing what systems can. We are meant for more.” – David Walsh (Source Control)
McDonald’s has a system, they can get any worker with any type of education and still produce the same hamburgers as the McDonald’s across town. Any person that chooses to own a franchise is given the same system every other franchise buyer is given. As entrepreneurs we need to recognize this concept at the start of any venture and always strive on how we can produce the same outstanding results by setting up systems around our business. The goal is not to create a job for yourself its to create ownership, flexibility, and freedom.
Create Your Own Game
Lifestyle design, life by design, whatever you wish to call it, life shouldn’t be lived on auto-pilot. We should be able to steer life in the direction we wish to live. Its amazing what happens when you simply have an idea of what direction you want to take in life and everything else starts to unfold. Take control and live life outside your confront zone.
Prepare to get knocked down nine times and to get back up ten. Challenge yourself to make gains in life and treat failures as learning experiences. Nobody said this mission will be easy, but what’s the fun of easy? Take on challenges and find ways to overcome them.
What type of expectations do you have for yourself? Anything you would like to agree or disagree on?

Hello and welcome, I'm Tony Ruiz. My work revolves around learning and applying efficient processes, human psychology, Internet marketing, and user experience to web-based projects. You can learn more about me
My expectation of myself is to continually grow my network. I take friendships/connections very seriously becasue you never know when you need that extra hand or some words of encouragement. I liked that you touched upon having “eagles instead of pigeons” in your inner circle… not only do their energies rub off on you but somehow you begin to feel the pressure (possible peer pressure?) to not be the “loser” in the group. I actually just wrote a post about meeting you in Phoenix and presenting the importance of networking. I also hope to develop multiple streams of income.
If anyone wants to learn more about systems and what Tony described under “creating your own game”… you should check out Linchpin by Seth Godin and listen to his 45 minute discussion: http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2010/04/aprillinchpin.html
Thanks for the shout out on your blog and thanks for the link too. I have Linchpin on my eReader and can’t get enough of Seth Godin. He is a brilliant Marketeer. Our journey is only beginning Monique, remember eagles vs. pigeons.
They say you are the sum of the five people you spend the most time with.
I think you are on a great path especially seeing how you are still in college!
Basically everything you mentioned in your post are expectations of mine… The great thing about passive income is that once you have enough set up to live, you can then spending that time GROWING instead of flat-lining like you do in a 9-5. Or you could spend your time EXPERIENCING again, something you cant really do in a 9-5.
Same goes with creating a system. Its all good stuff.
Keep designing Tony!
Thanks buddy!! I’m glad to know we share the same expectations. This should be a fun and challenging journey. I’m looking forward on sharing our insights with each other as we grow our ventures.
Nice list, Tony.
Keep up the good work, buddy!
Thank you Chris! I’ll make sure to keep you updated on my latest projects. Can’t wait to see what you have rolling out.
